were you upgrading your operating system by win xp to win 2000?
Which file systems r u running on? first of all to get back to your win 2k you need to edit your boot.ini file which contains the booting option. try to boot your pc on command promt by pressing F8 button when you boot you pc. and edit the boot.ini file. or may be you can chosse one of the other option like safe mode it might take you to win 2k. try that. and if you can't get to it. then boot your pc with boot disk if you r having FAT or FAT32 file system win98 boot disk can help you. -BLUE |

while you r upgrading your OS just install XP from other disk then uninstall the xp if you don't want XP it will give your win 2k back.
Editing Boot.ini file its dangerous for you. you might even lost the booting ability of XP setup so i say finish up your xp setup with other disk -BLUE |

My Fix to XP install problem
My Clean install of Win XP went okay through about halfway until the reboot part. Then the installation would hang with various messages including a missing file and missing folder (i386). XP never could fully load.
I solved this install problem and could do a successful and routine clean install of Win XP booting from the WIN XP CD. Here's what happened - I strongly suspect that there was a CDRW hardware problem, even though my CD drive was performing other tasks with few if any problems under Win 2K Pro. Also, an XP upgrade compatibility test showed no adverse issues with my Yamaha CDRW drive ( about 1 yr old). I suspect that the CD laser lens was dirty (never cleaned). How many of us clean the lens with a CD lens cleaner disc at least twice a month? But also, I bought a new Samsung 52x CDRW/DVD drive and connected it to my computer to do the XP installation. Now the XP install went smoothly and correctly and the clean install of XP went without a problem (using this new Samsung CDRW). I was fooled into believing that there could not be a hardware problem since my older Yamaha CDRW did most other things without any problem. I strongly believe that something as pathetically simple as a dirty laser lens in the CD drive itself cause the READ problems during isntallation, although it started the XP install okay. The problem was the the dirty lens cprevented the install process from finishing. Hope this helps. |

no i have 3 cd drives on this laptop one which is a yamaha but i have tried them in all of them and get the samp problem the computer will reset only giving me the win xp as an option to load it will then go to the install screen and a pop-up comes saying it is looking for a file "AMS" i then can not locate this particular file and the another screen that says Fatal error pops up and a manifest parse error: invalid at the top level of he document and installation failed d:\I386\asms. I do not know what that means all i know is i can't load up my win2000, what can i do?

CLEAN THE DRIVES
I used a CD/DVD cleaner from Memorex - it's actually a CD that cleans the laser lens. If you have not cleaned your lenses at least once a week, then there is a reasonable chance that the disc is not being read properly. I would invest $10 in a CD cleaner at a store such as BestBuy or CompUsa and then see if you can install XP. I think that you may have success. I have found that these lasers do get dirty, and can cause many data READ errors, even though these CD drives seem to be working fine for other things.

maybe this Finally
I did a Microsoft Hardware Advisor check before the upgrade to XP and it showed NO compatibility problems. But, I think that besides a dirty laser lens in the CD, perhaps all 3 of your CD drives could be incompatible in some way.
I received the same errors you received - looking for i386\asms file. Anyway, first try cleaning the CD laser lens with a disc Cleaner as mentioned earlier. |

When you reboot, did you enter the BIOS and change the boot sequence to CD (First Boot Device)? Then put your Win 2k CD in the CD drive and it should boot from the Win 2k CD disc. Change the boot order in your BIOS at the startup screen (usually hit the Delete key at the first screen)- do you know how to do that?
