Check your motherboard manufacturer's web site for updated drivers.
Windows Update is not a very good source for dependable drivers. |

used c-media download for the latest driver for that sound chip and installed with no problems but still no sound. device manager shows that everything is working, no flags anywhere, sound volume is up and not muted.

Have you tried this one:
http://www.windowsxp-drivers.com/drivers/58/58652.htm The motherboard manufacturer really should have an updated driver, provided you board is still supported. What make and model is it? |

Problem solved!!! It was the drivers that MicroSoft Update offered as well as the the drivers that the sound chip mfg. (c-media) had on their web download site. I had to go back to the old install CD that came with the MB and then it worked just fine.
thanks for the help anyway. rob |
