Win Xp problem installation

I just installed xp back on my machine. it had it previously and a problem caused me to return to 98, as it was the only o/s i had avaliable at the time.

yesterday i attempted to put xp back on the system.
the system was built for xp and i know all the hardware inside it is compatible.

everything functioned fine with 98.

the install itself went fine. the drive partitions were done correctly (i didnt upgrade the system i did a clean install)

then when the install finished it attempted to boot into xp, it gets past the loading screen and then stops at the next one, im not sure what it is because all isee is a black screen with a blue bar at the top with some coloured lines running through it.

the system does however boot into safe mode, which is what im using right now.

i tried to upgrade the system and it didnt fix the problem
i tried a clean install but now it wont let me delete or create any new partitions. i tried to install my video card drivers onto the system but because im in safe mode im having difficulty installing and running the updates.

i've got no idea whats caused this,
its obviously hanging up on some driver but i cant figure out which one.

Your video drivers are a likely culprit.

doug is more than likely right, but since you can boot into safe mode, go to my computer, right click it, go to properties then hardware, device manager, see if anything has a ! or ? next to it in yellow. download and install the drivers for it, if you dont have the XP drivers handy.
