Win2003 Server on Laptop with APM

I have a IBM 1400i Series laptop. Almost all of the models in this series use a chipset by ALi, and all of these have defective ACPI implementation under Win2K, WinXP, and now Win2003 Server, causing the PCI bus to run at half speed as well as random lock-ups. Naturally I had to install Win2003 Server on this laptop.

The good news is that the 1400i's run just fine under the "Standard PC" hal. The bad news--for Win2003 server--is that Win2003 server does not appear to include the "NT APM/Legacy Support" driver that is available in Win2K and WinXP.

I extracted the "NT APM/Legacy Node Interface" driver from an XP installation by installing the driver onto a desktop ACPI computer, and then finding the driver files.

Under Win2003 server, the XP driver goes through the New Hardware Wizard install process, but, on the last Wizard screen, returns this--

The following hardware was installed:
NtApm
An eror occurred during the installation of the device.
The class installer has denied the request
to install or upgrade the device.

So, does anyone know how to get around this roadblock?

Short: You shouldn't use broken hardware.
It's your laptop BIOS that is broken, not the windows ACPI implementation. Windows only detects this and warns you / disallows use of ACPI.

In my opinion, it is the chipset that is inadequate, and the bios cannot compensate for that shortcoming. IBM tried repeatedly to fix this problem through the bios, then announced that they were giving up.

In case you thought I was blaming Windows for this problem, I was not.
