Window Update files

It seems everytime I download and install these things, my HD space is being taken up quite a bit. I'm just wondering if the files that were downloaded and already installed, can they be removed (and where)? Or are they already removed and it's the installation extras that took up those space?

which version of windows are we talking about, and is it fat32 or ntfs? do you run disk cleanup often, if this is XP or ME when you run disk cleanup go to the more options tab and clean up system restore also, if you need the space and no problems are going on with the computer, also, defrag regularly and run a full scan disk. most of the updates from microsoft replace files, if you downloaded netframework, and dont need it or use it, remove it, the only updates you truely have to have are the critical updates, for security patches and bug fixes.

I believe there is a text file within the folder that states the folder is safe to delete.
