Windows 2000 Completely Freezes

Wierdest thing happens randomly to Windows 2000 when I'm running it. The computer will boot up fine, work completely fine for many hours, but then will randomly freeze. If I have music playing the music will stop, the mouse doesn't work, the keyboard won't respond, etc. Totally fried.

Strangely, I boot with num lock on, and even though my USB optical mouse has lost power, my PS/2 keyboard still has the numlock light on.

Only solution is to do a hard shutdown and reboot the computer. Does anyone know if this sounds like a Windows 2000 problem / virus, or if it could be a hardware problem? (I just built the comptuter a few days ago).

Thanks.

Is it overclocked? Because I heard of motherboards that have built in security features that either beep or 'stop' if the processor is too hot. OR it probably is a virus. Maybe you should run microsoft live update and see if you need anything.

No, the computer is not being overclocked, and there's no Windows update. Strange, very strange...

That sounds a LOT like a MSBlaster.exe problem, Gangsta. You might go for a Windows update or some anti-virus software.

So Ian, what else is running when W2k freezes? You wouldn't by chance have any idea how hot your processor is running would you?

What's a beantown anyway?

The programs that run under Win2k are the usual: IE6, usually Winamp, Trillian, Kazaa Lite... you know, the standard.

Yesterday, after checking with Windows Update and installing a few patches I was able to get the system to run all day without a crash, so hopefully it was a Windows error that the patch fixed. Only time will tell...

Beantown is just Boston, MA.

Yup. Probably a driver conflict or something that got cleaned up in a service pack. Hope it's happy computing here on out.

Gangsta, you get the worm? I heard you can get it after being online an average of just 25 minutes.

Anyone else get an email from Microsoft?
