Workstations can't browse the network

Small network - 1 Server running Win NT Small Business Server 4.0.; 4 workstations: 1 XP Pro, 2 Win ME, 1 Win 98. The server can see and access all of the computers on the network. But none of the workstations can access anything but the files on the server (the other PCs show up in Explorer, but cannot be accessed). DHCP is disabled (static IP addresses in the 10.0.0.x scheme are assigined). Tried setting up WINS, and that didn't seem to work. Any ideas??

TIA

Reboot the server. Look at event viewer after 15-20 minutes and look for the entries dealing with browser elections. See who is competing for browse master. I would suspec the xp pro box.

If you go into the client properties of the me and 98 boxes you can set being browse master from auto to disabled.

Make sure that the nt server is registered with xp pro box.

Not to ask a dumb question but on the other machines besides the server, you are sharing something right? You have to share what you want to access remotely. No share no access.

Thumbs up thanks!

When you say "go into the client properties of the me and 98 boxes" do you mean check the client properties on the server (like in server mgr or windows explorer) or on each individual client?

How do we make sure that the nt server is registered with xp pro box?

And yes, what needs to be shared, is shared!!

first step is to narrow down the browser election participants. You go to the actual me and 98 pcs to configure their client properties not to participate in browser elections which by default are set to auto. Set to disabled.

what is the error when you try to access a share?

Any firewall software installed like Zonealarm?
