XP/Red Hat 8.0 Dual Boot Issue
Need some assistance
I was running a dual-boot system (XP and Red Hat 8.0) with XP running on a 60GB master (two 30GB partitions) and Linux running on a 20GB slave. I originally installed Linux in an effort to familiarize myself with the operating system, however, now that storage space is at a premium on my system and since I rarely use Linux I decided to remove Red Hat 8.0. I removed Linux via disk management in XP (simply deleted the partitions in the 20GB slave and re-partitioned as NTFS). All was well until I rebooted the machine last night and was greeted with a black screen reading only "Grub_". I'm assuming this has something to do with the MBR failing to find Red Hat's boot loader. I've found some information on FDISK /MBR, but I'm leary about chancing such an move. I'm obviously no expert, however, so any advice is certainly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Roger |

Problem Solved
I seem to have solved my own problem through the following steps:
1. Booted the machine to system restore using the XP install CD 2. Logged in as system admin 3. Entered these commands: fixboot and fixmbr Viola! Problem Solved. Word of warning. Apparently fixmbr can throw your partition format out of wack and cause some serious issues if you have a less than conventional setup. Use at your own risk! |
