    Question Windows loading process tracking

Is there a utility that exposes, logs or allows greater step by step control over the Windows load process?

(or a better way of using Windows' own step-by-step mode)

I have a Win98 PC that now fails Windows start-up and I'm trying to identify the offending load item.

Safe mode works OK but all diagnosis in safe mode has failed to identify the offending item.

Ordinary step by step loading works to the point of freezing, but my experience is not sufficient to now identify the next item that is causing the problem.

Imagine if there was a DOS level TSR-type utility that I could load that then provides a report (even better detailed control over) on the rest of the boot / Windows loading process! In the event of a failure / freeze the utility would take back control and allow analysis of what just happened.

Surely if this does not exist it would be relatively easy to write?

P.S. I have already analysed a number of instances of the "Bootlog" file, but based on that information and where the load process stops I still can't solve the problem.
