Prefixing an asterisk to the value in runonce registry key work not working?!

i read on the internet that prefixing an asterisk to the value in runonce registry key makes that specified file to be run even in safe boot. i made the following .reg file and merged it, but when i booted in safe mode the following program did not run, ive checked that the following exe is present in the correct folder

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
    "*hi"="*C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe"
    im using windows xp
    pls help

Perhaps you should check where your read this, was it a Microsoft publication or some other source? I've never heard that this is a registry feature myself.

If I remember correctly, it's only the value name that requires the asterisk for it to start in Safe Mode.
    Code:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
    "*hi"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe"
Also, to make sure it works correctly, you might want to add it to the following RunOnce key:
    Code:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
@Doug - Yeah, it's on MSDN Library. "By default, these keys are ignored when the computer is started in Safe Mode. The value name of RunOnce keys can be prefixed with an asterisk (*) to force the program to run even in Safe mode." ==> Linky

I can think of many reasons, all legitimate. And as I just learned, after all this is a documented Microsoft function so apparently folks at MS have run across reasons to get programs to run in safe mode boot from the Run and RunOnce keys too.

So why in an opensource forum are such things discussed...

Meritorious as it may be, it may be an idea to nuke this thread, feel free to 'omit' my interjections if it is to stay

What the heck are you talking about? How to make a runOnce registry key work right is a perfectly legitimate subject to discuss in a windows forum. By your logic, we should not be discussing anything about (or with) computers because some people in the world use computers for bad purposes.

Don't see any reason to 'nuke' this thread to be honest
