How do the "special" buttons on my keyboard work (without drivers installed) right now?

What happens when you press them? I believe that most of keyboards require some software installed to support special keys.

They will still send a signal of some sort, but it's unlikely the computer itself will know how to interpret it. In a true "no drivers" scenario, NOTHING will EVER happen, including normal key presses. That's because the "driver" in any form is what converts a signal from some device (hardware or software) and converts it into commands the CPU understands how to process it. With *BASIC* keyboard drivers it pretty much just tries to map the 108 common keys to common signals to common commands. Anything beyond that will probably not be recognized.
