I am distributing MSXML 3.0 with an app. It only works on computers that also have IE5 installed. I'd like to keep the install as small as possible, so I'm wondering whether anyone out there has been able to distribute MSXML 3.0 without the full IE5 setup. Any details or advice on how this might be done would be appreciated.

Take a look at Microsofts MSDN pages and/or search for MSXML there -- I believe I ran across an article about a week or so ago about them coming out with a distribution package for MSXML. Should be just what you want.
